PROGRAMS, EVENTS & RESOURCES FOR THOSE

Navigating the Trades

Who is navigating the trades for?

Part of YWITT’s work includes equity-based programs, services & supports designed to build confidence and support women and gender diverse individuals as they navigate & build community.

Activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Developing resources, offering referrals and providing one-on-one advocacy support that will help workers address or navigate challenges and barriers

  • Creating opportunities for informal mentorship through relationship-building & skill sharing

  • Coordinating opportunities to find and connect to communities of women and gender diverse folks in the trades

  • Coordinating and/or facilitate capacity-building workshops (e.g. self-advocacy skills) and community-based conferences

FOR TRANS FOLKS

T4T Workshops

T4T shop time is a bi-monthly program run in collaboration with Yukonstruct. The workshop takes place in the early evening for 2-3 hours, where staff and peer instructors teach basic trades skills through building projects.

T4T shop time is space specifically for people who identify as transgender, two- spirit, or gender non-conforming, and strives to build capacity among participants to take on instructor and peer support roles. .

This program arose out of community conversations with queer and trans trades folks looking for:

  • Opportunities to connect with people who had similar experiences as them

  • A space where they could show up fully as themselves

  • A place to chat with, learn from, and alongside their trans community members

YWITT recognizes the unique challenges and gender-based violence that the trans and two spirit community face in the trades sector, and the importance of giving this small section of the community a space to gather, share and build.

Peer Learning Opportunities

YWITT strives to build capacity among participants to take on instructor and peer support roles through small group mentorship. In the past, we've hosted peer learning workshops to rebuild a car engine, support kitchen cabinet installation and develop fine woodworking skills.

If you are interested in hosting a peer learning session, please get in touch with us.

AT YWITT

We want to see more women and gender diverse folks thrive in the trades in the Yukon.
